It is with profound sorrow that the management and company of The Bolshoi Theatre of Russia announce that, following serious illness, the great Russian singer and world opera diva, People’s Artist of the USSR Elena Vasilievna Obraztsova passed away on 12th January 2015. They express their profound condolences to her family and dear ones.

The art of opera has suffered an irreparable loss. Elena Obraztsova possessed a unique voice, huge artistic talent, exceptional human qualities which won her the respect of the entire theatre community. She was a People’s Artist in the true sense of the term, and acknowledged as such by millions of fans throughout the world.

Her repertoire included all the Russian and foreign opera classics as well as rarely performed and highly complex chamber music. Ranging from the subtlest nuances of interpretation to large-scale emotional impact, her performances at the world’s leading opera houses and concert halls, left an indelible mark on the hearts of every listener and audience member.

Elena Obraztsova served her profession to her very last days. While leading an active creative life, she generously shared her talent with young colleagues and, sparing neither strength nor time on their training, helped many talented young singers to make it on the professional stage. Her colleagues and friends, fans and heirs bow their heads in tribute to her labor and express their undying gratitude for all that she did for them.

Her great destiny as a singer and her outstanding qualities as a human being stand as an integral part of — and monument to — our Russian culture and that of the world as a whole.
